File sharing is the process of transferring and sharing information/data across a network or the Internet. By utilizing file sharing, users can share files easily regardless of location difference, etc. As stated by the article "P2P file sharing", P2P file sharing is a peer to peer file sharing which allows individuals to access media files using software program that searches and locates computers that have the file that is wanted." Users of P2P file sharing are able to share files to one another through a software program. Through this, users are able to transfer music, texts, and movies. Some examples of P2P file sharing are Gnutella, where users can send a request for a file, wait for the software to locate the file, and download the file; Napster, where thousands of audio files donated by users are contained on the server; BitTorrent, where users swap movies, songs, and shows illegally; and many others. File sharing and P2P file sharing are free and sometimes illegal ways of people sharing pirated files. Some such illegal sharing greatly harm the profits of the original owners. As per the article "Digital Pirates Winning Battle With Studios", pirated and illegal copies of movies that could be downloaded millions of times have caused a great problem for copyright lawyers and executives. The continuance of watching illegal streamings and downloads have decreased the revenue for the film studios. Though file sharing and P2P sharing is free for the users, it may cause legal issues to arise.
